How Does It Work?

Solar hot-water systems consist of three major components:

  • the solar collectors (panels)
  • a storage tank
  • a closed-loop circulation system
  1. When the sun shines on the collectors, solar fluid in the panels absorbs the sun's energy and becomes hot.
  2. A control pump circulates this hot fluid from the collectors through insulated pipes to a heat exchanger that transfers the heat to the potable water in the solar storage tank.
  3. The solar storage tank supplies the hot water to the existing water heating system.
  4. The solar fluid is then pumped back to the collectors and the process begins again.
